Most retaining wall failures trace back to one issue: trapped water. When water can’t escape, pressure builds behind the wall and pushes it out of plumb.
Signs your wall has a drainage problem
- Leaning, bulging, or bowing sections
- Cracking or separating blocks/stone
- Soil washing out at the base
- Persistent wet areas after normal rain
- Efflorescence or staining on the wall face
What proper drainage usually includes
- Drainage stone backfill (not native clay soil)
- Filter fabric to prevent clogging
- Drain tile or outlet paths to daylight
- Correct grading and surface water routing
For engineered walls and hillside projects, the solution may also include reinforcement (geogrid) and footing upgrades. See retaining walls for typical scope and expectations.
If drainage issues are affecting adjacent foundations, review foundation repair options as well.
